Where it came from
The 1969 1 Lek coin was issued by the People's Socialist Republic of Albania to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the country's liberation from Nazi occupation in 1944. During this period, Albanian coinage heavily emphasized state-sanctioned socialist realism, utilizing imagery that glorified the partisan struggle and the subsequent establishment of the communist regime under Enver Hoxha.
The design features the Albanian state emblem, which prominently displays a five-pointed red star above a double-headed eagle, surrounded by wheat stalks. It was minted at a time when the nation was intensifying its isolationist policies, and the aesthetic choice reflected a departure from the traditional heraldry of the pre-communist era in favor of iconography that served to reinforce the legitimacy of the Workers' Party.
