10 000 Dram (Priest Komitas Vardapet)

The 10,000 Dram coin was issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 2006 as part of a commemorative series honoring notable figures in Armenian culture. This specific issue celebrates Komitas Vardapet, the renowned musicologist, composer, and priest who is considered the founder of modern Armenian classical music. By depicting him on currency, the state sought to pay tribute to his monumental efforts in collecting and preserving thousands of Armenian folk songs during the early 20th century.

The design of the coin reflects the dignified and somber aesthetic associated with the legacy of Komitas. Minted in silver, the obverse typically features the national emblem, while the reverse captures a portrait of the composer alongside symbols relevant to his contributions to liturgical and secular music. The release was intended for both numismatic collectors and those wishing to hold a tangible piece of Armenian national identity, receiving modest acclaim for its high-relief detail and its respectful portrayal of a pivotal historical figure.
