Where it came from
Issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 2011, this 10,000 dram coin is part of a commemorative series celebrating the medieval Armenian manuscript illuminator Toros Roslin. Roslin was the most prominent illustrator of the Cilician school of manuscript painting during the 13th century, renowned for his refined compositions, rich color palette, and complex theological iconography. The coin serves as a numismatic tribute to his lasting influence on Armenian art and historical identity.
The design of the coin prominently features a detailed relief based on Roslin's famous illuminated manuscripts, reflecting the intricate geometric and floral patterns characteristic of the period. By choosing to honor Roslin, the Central Bank aimed to bridge the gap between historical cultural preservation and modern commemorative minting. The issue was well-received by collectors of religious and art-historical currency for its technical precision and its role in elevating the status of Armenian artistic heritage on an international stage.
