Where it came from
The 100 Dram coin was issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 2012 to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Parajanov, the visionary filmmaker and artist of Armenian descent. Released as part of a broader program honoring notable cultural figures, the coin serves as a tribute to his significant contributions to world cinema and his distinct, surreal aesthetic style.
The design of the coin features a portrait of Parajanov, capturing his contemplative and creative spirit. The production was intended to preserve his legacy, reflecting the deep cultural pride Armenia holds for his unique artistic language, which blended folklore, iconographic imagery, and avant-garde composition. Upon its release, the coin was noted by numismatists for its high-relief detail and its faithful representation of a man whose work famously challenged the conventions of Soviet-era artistic expression.
