Where it came from
The 2022 Andorran 1.25 Euro coin featuring the red squirrel is part of a series dedicated to the diverse fauna found within the Pyrenees mountains. Released as a collector's issue by the Servei d'Emissions de la Vegueria Episcopal, these coins serve as both legal tender within the Principality and as a numismatic tribute to the region's natural heritage. The choice of the red squirrel highlights the local biodiversity that Andorra actively seeks to preserve and showcase to an international audience.
The design was crafted to capture the agility and charm of the red squirrel, a species emblematic of the dense coniferous forests spanning the Andorran landscape. The artistry focuses on clean, anatomical accuracy, intended to appeal to both wildlife enthusiasts and coin collectors. Upon release, the coin was noted for its unique denomination, which deviates from standard circulation currency, marking it as a specialized piece designed primarily for those interested in European microstate commemorative issues.
