Where it came from
This 2-euro commemorative coin was issued by Andorra in 2022 to mark the 1200th anniversary of the death of Charlemagne. As a microstate with a historical link to the Carolingian dynasty—traditionally citing a charter granted by Charlemagne himself—Andorra often releases numismatic pieces that celebrate its unique political heritage and medieval roots.
The design features a stylized profile of Charlemagne, integrating traditional heraldic motifs with contemporary artistic sensibilities. Minted in a limited volume characteristic of Andorran commemorative issues, it was received with significant interest by European collectors who specialize in the currency of smaller sovereign states, serving as both a legal tender instrument and a piece of historical commemoration.
