Where it came from
This 2 euro commemorative coin was released by the Principality of Andorra in 2023 to celebrate the traditions of the summer solstice fire festival. Recognized by UNESCO as an element of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, these fire-based festivals are deeply rooted in the Pyrenean traditions, where local communities participate in complex rituals involving torches and bonfires to mark the longest day of the year and ensure the prosperity of their valleys.
The design of the coin features a stylized, artistic representation of the solstice fire, incorporating traditional motifs that reflect the folkloric significance of the event. Intended to honor the cultural resilience of the Andorran people, the imagery was selected to capture the movement and communal spirit of the flame-bearing processions. Upon its release, the coin was well received by the numismatic community for its thematic tribute to European intangible heritage and its adherence to the technical standards for Andorran euro coinage.
