Where it came from
The 2018 Year of the Dog 15-dollar coin was struck by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of their long-running Lunar Lotus series. This collection celebrates the Chinese Zodiac, with each coin produced in fine silver and shaped into a distinctive lotus flower motif, a design choice intended to symbolize harmony and good fortune. These coins were produced to appeal to collectors interested in numismatic art that bridges Western minting traditions with Eastern cultural iconography.
The reverse design was created by artist Aries Cheung, who utilized traditional Chinese paper-cut aesthetics to depict the dog, an animal representing loyalty and honesty in the zodiac. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, which has been the standard portrait on Canadian coinage for years. Upon its release, the coin was noted for its aesthetic detail and the technical challenge of minting the intricate lotus-shaped planchet, becoming a recurring highlight for those who follow the Mint's annual lunar series.
