15 Dollars - Elizabeth II (King of Hearts)

The 2009 15 Dollars King of Hearts coin was released by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of the popular Playing Card series. This series was conceived to celebrate classic imagery through fine numismatic craftsmanship, utilizing colorization techniques that were increasingly refined by the Mint at the time. The coin features the King of Hearts, a figure rooted in centuries of card game tradition, rendered in a stylized, bold graphic format suitable for both collectors of playing cards and traditional numismatists.

The design of the coin emphasizes the iconic, symmetrical aesthetics of the King of Hearts, characterized by its traditional attire and beard. The Royal Canadian Mint collaborated with its internal design team to balance the classic iconography with the high-relief and vibrant color application expected of their limited edition collector pieces. Upon its release, it was well-received by those interested in whimsical thematic coinage, establishing a distinct niche within Canadian commemorative numismatics that blended functional design with decorative appeal.
