Where it came from
The 2 Florins of 1490 were minted during the turbulent regency of Philip the Handsome, who was then the young Duke of Burgundy and sovereign of the Duchy of Brabant. This coinage emerged during a period of transition following the death of Mary of Burgundy, as the region sought to assert monetary stability amidst complex political pressures and the shifting influence of the Habsburg dynasty.
The design reflects the transition from medieval aesthetics to the burgeoning Renaissance portraiture of the Low Countries. By depicting the youthful duke in a style that emphasizes the weight of his dynastic authority, the coin served as both a medium of exchange and a vital piece of political iconography intended to consolidate Philip's legitimacy among the merchant classes of Brabant.
