Where it came from
The 2 Francs Allied Occupation coin was minted in 1944 for use in Belgium during the liberation by Allied forces. As the Nazi occupation retreated, the Allied military command faced a currency vacuum and needed a stable medium of exchange for soldiers and local citizens. These coins were produced under the authority of the Allied Military Government to replace the devalued and German-controlled currency circulating at the time.
The design is purely utilitarian, focusing on functionality and rapid mass production rather than aesthetic flair. Struck in zinc, the coin lacks the intricate artistry of pre-war Belgian coinage, reflecting the resource shortages and industrial limitations of the late war period. Its stark, simple lettering and minimalist layout were received primarily as a necessary tool for economic stabilization in the chaotic months following the liberation.
