2 Mace - Guangxu (Pattern; Hu Poo; silver)

The 1903 Hu Poo 2 Mace silver pattern coin was struck during the late Qing Dynasty, a period characterized by intense efforts to modernize China's currency system. Commissioned by the Ministry of Revenue, or Hu Poo, these patterns were produced by the Tientsin Mint to replace the chaotic variety of local and foreign silver coins circulating within the empire with a unified, national coinage standard.

The design was influenced by the collaborative efforts of foreign and domestic technicians seeking to balance traditional imperial iconography with modern Western minting techniques. Although the coin features sophisticated engraving, the pattern was never mass-produced for general circulation. It remains a significant numismatic rarity, representing the transitional struggles of the late imperial era and the short-lived attempt to centralize monetary authority before the collapse of the dynasty.
