Where it came from
Released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2015, this 20-cent coin was part of a commemorative series honoring the contribution of animals to Australia’s war efforts. The collection was designed to coincide with the centenary of the Anzac spirit, highlighting the often-overlooked roles played by horses, dogs, pigeons, and camels in various global conflicts. The design serves as a somber yet appreciative tribute to the bond between human soldiers and their animal counterparts during times of service.
The reverse of the coin features a poignant illustration depicting a soldier and an animal, rendered with a focus on historical accuracy and emotional resonance. The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the standard portrait used on Australian decimal coinage during that era. It was received by the numismatic community as a thoughtful addition to Australia's ongoing series of military-themed commemoratives, appealing to both history enthusiasts and serious collectors of Australian circulating coins.
