Where it came from
The 3 Euro Antarctic krill coin was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2023 as part of the ongoing 'Glowing Marine Life' series. This series focuses on the unique biodiversity of the world's oceans, with this particular issue highlighting the critical role of krill within the Antarctic ecosystem. The coin was developed to showcase the Austrian Mint's advanced minting technology, specifically the application of color-printed elements that react under ultraviolet light to simulate bioluminescence.
The design was crafted by the Mint’s skilled engraving team, who aimed to balance scientific accuracy with an aesthetic that captures the ethereal nature of deep-sea life. By featuring the krill against a detailed relief of the Antarctic seafloor, the design emphasizes the importance of these small crustaceans in the marine food web. The coin was well-received by collectors and science enthusiasts alike, gaining attention primarily for its technical innovation and its educational focus on environmental conservation.
