Where it came from
Released in 2011 by the Royal Canadian Mint, this 25-dollar silver coin celebrates the legacy of hockey icons Wayne and Walter Gretzky. The coin was issued as part of a tribute to Canadian sports history, specifically highlighting the bond between the legendary player and his father, an instrumental figure in his development. Its creation sought to memorialize their contribution to the sport beyond mere athletic achievement, focusing on the mentorship and values often associated with their public story.
The coin's design features a dual portrait style, showcasing an image of Wayne Gretzky alongside his father, Walter. Produced in fine silver, the artwork aims for a respectful, commemorative tone typical of the Mint’s collectible series. Upon release, it was primarily marketed toward hockey enthusiasts and numismatists interested in Canadian cultural figures, receiving a stable reception from collectors who prioritize the intersection of sports memorabilia and limited-edition coinage.
