Where it came from
The 3 Euro Swell Shark coin is part of the Austrian Mint's ongoing 'Coloring the Creatures of the Deep' series, which launched in 2022. These coins are minted to celebrate marine biodiversity, specifically highlighting unique species found in oceans worldwide. The series is notable for using color-printed elements that glow in the dark, a feature designed to mimic the bioluminescence or distinctive visual patterns of the featured aquatic animals.
The design of the Swell Shark coin captures the creature's characteristic ability to inflate its body with water or air to avoid predators. The Austrian Mint worked with its internal design team to create a highly detailed, relief-focused representation of the shark, contrasted against a vibrant, stylized aquatic background. Upon its release in 2023, the coin was well-received by collectors who specialize in European commemorative coinage and those drawn to the novelty of the series' phosphorescent technology.
