Where it came from
The 3 Euro Mosasaurus coin is part of the 'Supersaurus' series issued by the Austrian Mint in 2020. This series was designed to appeal to both numismatists and natural history enthusiasts, highlighting prehistoric creatures that once roamed the Earth. The coin celebrates the Mosasaurus, a massive marine reptile from the Late Cretaceous period, known for its predatory prowess in ancient oceans.
The artistic design was executed by the talented team at the Austrian Mint, who utilized advanced minting techniques to achieve a vibrant, color-printed effect on the reverse side of the coin. This series is notable for its innovative use of glow-in-the-dark elements, which was intended to make the fossilized imagery more engaging for younger collectors. Upon its release, the coin was well-received for its blend of educational value and modern technical execution, quickly becoming a popular entry in the broader collection of Austrian commemorative currency.
