Where it came from
The 3 Euro Ornithomimus coin was released by the Austrian Mint in 2022 as the seventh installment of the 'Supersaurus' series. This series was conceived to celebrate the wonders of paleontology, featuring various dinosaurs that once inhabited the Earth, aimed at both numismatists and natural history enthusiasts. The coin series is highly distinctive for its heptagonal shape and the application of color-printing technology that brings the prehistoric imagery to life.
The design of the Ornithomimus coin was executed by the Austrian Mint's master engravers, who focused on depicting the swift, ostrich-like characteristics of the dinosaur against a backdrop of a primitive landscape. The coin also features the common elements of the series, including the silhouettes of other dinosaurs on the obverse. Upon its release, it was well-received for its artistic balance and its ability to act as an educational piece, continuing the Mint's tradition of blending technical innovation with historical and scientific narratives.
