Where it came from
The 3-euro Spinosaurus coin was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2019 as the fifth installment in the 'Supersaurus' series. This series was conceived to celebrate the fascination with prehistoric giants, utilizing the unique denomination of 3 euros, which was specifically designed for commemorative issues rather than circulation. The coins are celebrated for their color-printed motifs, which utilize glow-in-the-dark technology to bring the extinct creature to life under UV light, reflecting the mint's commitment to blending traditional numismatics with modern, interactive aesthetics.
The design of the Spinosaurus coin was executed by the mint’s acclaimed engraving team, who aimed to emphasize the biological features and semi-aquatic nature of this specific theropod. By focusing on the distinctive sail-like spine and snout, the designers created a visual narrative that appealed to both paleontologists and coin collectors alike. Upon its release, the issue was met with significant enthusiasm, quickly becoming a staple in European commemorative collecting for its technical innovation and vibrant, educational approach to natural history.
