Where it came from
The 2001 Australian five-cent gold proof coin was struck by the Royal Australian Mint as part of the celebration of the Centenary of Federation. This period marked a significant national milestone, reflecting on the 100 years since Australia’s six colonies united to form the Commonwealth in 1901. The gold proof finish was specifically intended for numismatic collectors, elevating the standard circulating denomination into a commemorative asset.
The obverse features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, which was introduced in 1999 to replace the Raphael Maklouf portrait. Rank-Broadley’s design is noted for its realistic and more mature depiction of the Queen. The reverse side retains the iconic echidna design by Stuart Devlin, an image that has been synonymous with the Australian five-cent piece since the introduction of decimal currency in 1966.
