Where it came from
The Canadian five-cent coin, or nickel, underwent a significant material transition in 2003. While the early 2003 issues retained the traditional composition, the introduction of the magnetic version marked a shift toward plated steel technology. This change was necessitated by the rising cost of metals and the goal of producing a more durable, cost-effective currency for daily circulation within the Canadian economy.
The obverse of this coin features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by artist Susanna Blunt. This portrait represents a modern, more stylized departure from previous iterations, portraying the Queen without a crown, which was a notable aesthetic choice at the time. The transition to the magnetic version is distinguished by a small 'P' mint mark below the effigy, indicating it was produced using the Royal Canadian Mint's proprietary plating process, a design hallmark that became standard for subsequent circulation coinage.
