Where it came from
The 2015 Canadian five-cent coin featuring the crossed bough design is a modern tribute to the classic 'beaver' nickel, which was originally introduced in 1937 to replace the larger, silver-content pieces. This specific 2015 issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Canadian national flag, serving as a circulating numismatic reminder of Canadian identity. The design retains the iconic maple bough motif, originally conceived by G. E. Kruger Gray, which has remained a stable and recognizable element of Canadian coinage for decades.
The 2015 edition features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt, which has been in use on Canadian coinage since 2003. This particular piece was produced during a period of transition in Canadian minting technology, focusing on cost-effective, multi-ply plated steel compositions. While the design echoes the heritage of 20th-century numismatics, it reflects contemporary manufacturing standards intended for high-volume circulation and durability.
