Where it came from
The 2015 'Victory Nickel' was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint as a commemorative tribute to the original 1943-1945 design. The original wartime issue was created by Thomas Shingles to encourage the war effort, featuring a large V for Victory that doubled as a mint mark and a torch design. By choosing this motif for the 2015 release, the Mint intended to honor the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the contribution of Canadians to the Allied cause.
The design faithfully reproduces Shingles' original composition, which remains one of the most iconic pieces in Canadian numismatic history for its combination of nationalistic symbolism and functional wartime metal conservation. While the 2015 edition is struck in nickel-plated steel rather than the tombac alloy used during the 1940s, it serves as a tactile bridge between contemporary minting technology and the historical anxieties of the mid-20th century. It was widely distributed to both collectors and the general public, serving as a popular circulation coin that emphasized a collective memory of the victory period.
