Where it came from
The 2016 5 Dollars Elizabeth II April Birthstone coin is part of a recurring series issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, which celebrates each month of the year through the lens of traditional birthstones. These coins were designed to serve as both legal tender and personalized gift items, marking a shift in the mint's catalog toward collectible numismatic products targeted at casual collectors and those looking for commemorative tokens rather than traditional currency.
The design of the April coin features a stylized image of a diamond, representing the birthstone for that month, rendered with a Swarovski crystal element embedded into the sterling silver surface. The reverse side features the classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt, which has been a staple of Canadian coinage since 2003. This series was received as a standard entry in the Mint's extensive commemorative portfolio, appreciated primarily for its aesthetic appeal and its utility as a thematic gift.
