Where it came from
Released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2016, this five-dollar coin was part of a popular twelve-part series celebrating the months of the year, each featuring a different Swarovski crystal to represent a specific birthstone. Designed to appeal to both gift-givers and commemorative collectors, the series sought to blend traditional numismatic craft with contemporary jewelry aesthetics, focusing on accessibility and personal significance rather than strictly historical or political themes.
The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, a design that has been a staple of Canadian coinage since 2003. The reverse design showcases a floral arrangement specific to the birth month, centered around a small crystal. Upon its release, the series was received primarily as a collectible novelty item, appreciated by hobbyists for its precise craftsmanship and the thematic consistency maintained across the entire twelve-coin set.
