5 Dollars - Elizabeth II (May Birthstone)

The 2016 five-dollar coin featuring the May birthstone is part of a broader series issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, designed to offer collectors a personal connection to their birth month through precious metals and Swarovski crystals. These coins were minted as legal tender in Canada, though their value lies primarily in their collectible nature and artistic finish rather than their face value. The series reflects the Mint's strategy of producing themed, commemorative coinage that appeals to the gift-giving market and those interested in personalized numismatic items.

The design of this coin incorporates a refined portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt on the obverse, a standard for Canadian currency during that era. The reverse features an artistic interpretation of the month of May, centered around the green emerald-colored Swarovski crystal representing the birthstone. The imagery and aesthetic choices were intended to balance traditional Canadian heraldic influences with contemporary, accessible themes, and the series was generally received as a popular entry-level offering for newer collectors who value visual appeal and thematic consistency.
