Where it came from
The 3-euro coin series featuring animals was introduced by the Austrian Mint in 2016, designed as a modern series of collectible coins rather than for general circulation. The 2018 'Parrot' coin is the ninth issue in the 'Coloring the World' series, which distinguishes itself through the use of vibrant, glow-in-the-dark enamel printing on a cupronickel base. These coins are intended to highlight the biodiversity of the natural world through a distinct artistic approach that balances numismatic tradition with contemporary design.
The design of the parrot was created by the Austrian Mint’s renowned design team, who utilized specialized color-printing technology to make the plumage fluoresce under UV light. This design choice was intended to appeal to a younger demographic of collectors and those interested in animal conservation themes. Upon release, the series garnered attention for its unique aesthetic and innovative use of color, cementing its place as a popular entry in the mint’s ongoing portfolio of thematic collector coins.
