Where it came from
This 5-pound coin was issued in 2004 by the Bailiwick of Alderney to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Struck in silver proof quality, the coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the Allied forces who participated in the liberation of Normandy during the Second World War. Such issues were part of a broader trend of commemorative coinage released by British Crown Dependencies to honor significant milestones in twentieth-century military history.
The design features imagery reflecting the gravity and historic scope of the 1944 invasion, incorporating symbolic elements often associated with British commemorative medallic art of the era. The piece was produced for collectors seeking high-quality silver specimens, adhering to the standard high-relief finishes common in Royal Mint and associated minting house productions of the early 2000s. It was received primarily as a collectible investment piece for those interested in military heritage and modern coin history.
