Where it came from
This 5-pound silver proof coin was issued by the island of Alderney to commemorate the total solar eclipse that occurred on August 11, 1999. As the last total solar eclipse of the 20th century to be visible from parts of Europe, the event generated significant public interest and scientific observation, prompting various jurisdictions within the British Isles and Crown Dependencies to release commemorative currency marking the astronomical phenomenon.
The coin features an artistic representation of the solar eclipse, emphasizing the corona and the darkened sun as viewed from the perspective of the observer. Minted in silver proof quality, the design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the Royal Mint’s late-90s commemorative program, which often favored dramatic celestial themes to appeal to both numismatists and the broader public interested in the millennium-transition period.
