Where it came from
The 2015 50-dollar In Flanders Fields coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the composition of John McCrae’s iconic poem. Released as part of Canada's broader efforts to honor the sacrifice of soldiers during the First World War, the coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the poem that solidified the poppy as an enduring symbol of remembrance.
The design was crafted by artist Tony Bianco, who sought to capture the poignancy of the landscape described in the poem. The reverse features a selectively colored poppy set against a backdrop of grave markers, emphasizing the contrast between the vibrant bloom and the solemnity of the field. Upon its release, the coin was noted by collectors for its fine craftsmanship and its significant historical resonance within Canadian cultural memory.
