Action Comics Weekly #617

Action Comics Weekly #617 was released in 1988 as part of a significant experimental phase for DC Comics. Following the conclusion of the long-running numbered sequence of the flagship Action Comics title, the publisher transitioned the book into a weekly anthology format. This shift was intended to provide a rotating showcase for various characters, most notably Green Lantern, while maintaining the legacy of the Action Comics brand during a period of experimentation in the comic book industry.

The issue features work from a variety of creative talents contributing to the anthology's serial format, with the Green Lantern segments being a primary draw for readers. The design and editorial direction were steered by the editorial staff at DC, who aimed to revitalize the weekly reading experience by balancing established heroes with shorter, serialized narratives. While the weekly format was ambitious, it faced challenges in sustaining momentum and was eventually phased out, leading to the return of Action Comics to its traditional monthly release schedule.
