Action Comics Weekly #616

Action Comics Weekly #616, published in September 1988, represents a transitional experiment in DC Comics' history. During this period, the publisher attempted to revitalize its flagship title by converting it into an anthology format, featuring a rotating cast of characters including Green Lantern, Blackhawk, and Deadman. This shift was designed to mirror the weekly newspaper comic strip model, providing readers with serialized installments rather than a single complete story, and was intended to capitalize on the sustained interest in DC's expanding character roster.

The issue features cover art by Brian Bolland, whose distinct, clean line work and detailed composition were instrumental in establishing the visual identity of the series. The anthology format reflected the editorial push at the time to increase engagement through variety and pacing. While the experimental weekly format eventually concluded to return the title to its traditional monthly iteration, this issue remains a representative artifact of a specific, high-frequency period of production during the late 1980s.
