America vs. the Justice Society #1

America vs. the Justice Society #1, published in 1985, serves as a cornerstone of DC Comics' post-Crisis continuity. The four-issue miniseries was created to address the narrative tension between the Golden Age heroes of Earth-Two and the contemporary sensibilities of the modern DC Universe, framing the Justice Society of America as potential traitors to the United States. This political intrigue provided a bridge between the traditional legacy of the JSA and the shifting editorial direction of the era.

The series was written by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, and Cary Bates, with artwork primarily handled by Rafael Kayanan. The design and visual narrative focused on the contrast between the vintage, heroic aesthetic of the JSA and a darker, bureaucratic scrutiny, reflecting the cynical political climate of the mid-1980s. Upon release, the series was well-received by long-term fans for its commitment to historical continuity, effectively using the JSA's long history as the engine for its central mystery.
