Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld #11

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld #11, released in 1984, serves as the penultimate issue of the original twelve-part limited series published by DC Comics. Created by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, and artist Ernie Colón, the series emerged during a period of experimentation at DC, blending high fantasy elements with traditional superhero tropes. The narrative follows Amy Winston, a teenager who discovers she is the princess of a magical realm, reflecting the era's growing interest in 'portal fantasy' storytelling.

Ernie Colón's art style in this issue is celebrated for its ethereal, vibrant depictions of the Gemworld, which stood in stark contrast to the grittier urban settings common in comics at the time. The series was well-received for its unique aesthetic and its clear-eyed exploration of Amy's transition from an ordinary girl to a powerful sovereign. Issue #11 continues the high-stakes confrontation between Amethyst and the villainous Dark Opal, maintaining the series' reputation for rich world-building and character-driven stakes.
