Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld #14

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld #14 was published by DC Comics in 1984 as the penultimate issue of the title's original twelve-issue limited series, which had been extended to accommodate its unexpected popularity. Created by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, and artist Ernie Colón, the series introduced readers to Amy Winston, a teenager who discovers she is a princess from a mystical dimension. The narrative blended high fantasy elements with traditional superhero tropes, standing out in the mid-eighties comic market for its focus on complex female characters and vibrant, ethereal world-building.

The visual design of the series was largely defined by Ernie Colón, whose work helped distinguish the Gemworld aesthetic from the grittier urban settings common in other DC publications at the time. The series sought to bridge the gap between traditional sword-and-sorcery fantasy and modern comic book adventure. Upon its release, the title garnered a dedicated following and remains a notable example of DC’s experimentation with character-driven fantasy during the early 1980s, eventually securing the series a place in the publisher's broader multiverse lore.
