Where it came from
Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld #3 was released in 1983 as part of a twelve-issue limited series published by DC Comics. Created by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, and artist Ernie Colón, the series was designed to blend high fantasy tropes with the superhero genre, featuring a teenager named Amy Winston who discovers she is the princess of a magical dimension. The series was notable for its distinct aesthetic, which departed from the grittier tone of many contemporary comics in favor of a vibrant, ethereal visual style.
The third issue continues the narrative arc of Amy’s struggle against the villain Dark Opal and serves to deepen the world-building of Gemworld. Ernie Colón’s illustrative work on this series is frequently cited by collectors for its clean lines and imaginative creature designs. Upon its debut, the series was well-received for its unique premise and proved successful enough to garner a dedicated following and several subsequent appearances for the character within the broader DC Universe.
