Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld #9

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld debuted in 1983 as a limited series published by DC Comics, conceived by creators Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, and artist Ernie Colón. The story followed Amy Winston, a teenager who discovers she is the princess of a magical dimension called Gemworld. This ninth issue was part of the original twelve-part limited series that stood out for its high-fantasy narrative and colorful, distinct aesthetic, which departed from the grittier superhero conventions typical of DC at the time.

The visual identity of the series was largely shaped by Ernie Colón’s dynamic character designs and the vibrant, ethereal coloring that mirrored the gemstone-themed monarchy of the story. The series was well-received upon its release, praised for its imaginative world-building and its ability to appeal to a broad demographic, eventually leading to multiple sequels and cementing the title as a notable cult classic within the DC multiverse of the 1980s.
