Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children #20

Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children was a notable alternative comic series published by Piranha Press, an imprint of DC Comics, starting in 1989. Conceived as a mature, experimental anthology, the series aimed to bridge the gap between traditional comic books and the burgeoning underground graphic storytelling movement. The publication featured a rotating cast of creators who utilized the platform to explore surreal, often macabre themes that defied the typical superhero conventions of the era.

Issue #20 stands within this tradition of offbeat, satirical narratives that characterized the series' run. The creative direction generally favored stark, evocative illustrations that leaned into the 'ugly' aesthetic, intentionally challenging the reader with unsettling imagery and cynical humor. While it was never a mainstream commercial success, the title is remembered by collectors for its role in showcasing the creative freedom DC provided to independent-minded artists and writers during the late eighties and early nineties.
