Where it came from
Boule & Bill, created by cartoonist Jean Roba in 1959, centers on the humorous adventures of a young boy and his loyal cocker spaniel. Issue 40, titled 'Miam!', marks a significant entry in the long-running Belgian comic series, which shifted from its original creator to Laurent Verron following Roba's retirement. Verron maintained the characteristic lighthearted aesthetic and domestic slapstick that defined the franchise for decades, preserving the legacy of the duo's gentle interactions.
The design of the series has remained consistent, emphasizing the expressive, rounded character work and vivid, classic ligne claire influences that became a staple of Franco-Belgian comics. The 40th volume continues this tradition, focusing on the everyday antics of Bill the cocker spaniel, a character originally inspired by Roba's own pet. These issues are generally received as nostalgic staples of European humor, celebrated for their ability to remain accessible to younger readers while retaining the artistic craftsmanship established by Roba.
