Call of the Night #9

Call of the Night, known in Japan as Yofukashi no Uta, is a supernatural manga series written and illustrated by Kotoyama, who previously gained acclaim for the series Dagashi Kashi. The series began serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2019, emerging from a creative desire to explore the aesthetic and emotional resonance of nocturnal city life. The narrative follows an insomniac middle school student, Ko Yamori, and his encounter with a vampire named Nazuna Nanakusa, blending themes of isolation with urban fantasy.

The ninth volume continues the established visual style characteristic of Kotoyama’s work, which is noted for its high-contrast, atmospheric depiction of Tokyo at night. By the time of the release of volume nine, the series had garnered significant attention for its distinct character designs and the evocative, neon-drenched mood set by the author. It was well-received by readers for its mature approach to themes of loneliness and freedom, contributing to the series' eventual adaptation into a widely recognized anime.
