Call of the Night #8

Call of the Night, known in Japan as Yofukashi no Uta, is a manga series written and illustrated by Kotoyama that began serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2019. The series explores themes of nocturnal escapism and adolescent longing, centering on a middle school student who wanders the night and encounters a vampire. The eighth volume, released as part of the ongoing collected tankobon editions, continues the narrative's distinct aesthetic, characterized by Kotoyama’s moody, atmospheric art style that captures the lonely, neon-lit essence of nighttime Japan.

The series received significant acclaim for its visual direction and its unique take on the vampire genre, eventually inspiring a well-regarded anime adaptation. Within the context of the series, the eighth volume serves as a critical point in the development of the protagonists' complex relationship. Kotoyama’s design work on the covers is noted for its high-contrast color palettes and character-focused compositions, which have become a signature visual language for the franchise, resonating with a demographic that appreciates both character-driven slice-of-life storytelling and stylistic supernatural elements.
