Coda Deluxe Edition #1

Coda, written by Simon Spurrier and illustrated by Matías Bergara, was first serialized as a monthly comic series by BOOM! Studios starting in 2018. Set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world following a cataclysmic event known as the Quench, the narrative follows a misanthropic bard named Hum as he traverses a dying landscape. The deluxe edition was released to collect the initial story arc, featuring an oversized hardcover format intended to better showcase Bergara’s intricate, watercolor-inspired aesthetic and detailed world-building.

The creative team aimed to subvert traditional high-fantasy tropes, grounding the series in themes of personal grief and the struggle to maintain humanity in a ruined environment. Matías Bergara’s visual style, characterized by chaotic linework and a vibrant, often jarring color palette, was highly praised for its ability to convey both the whimsy and the decay of the setting. Upon its release, the series was well-received by critics for its unique blend of dark humor and genuine pathos, solidifying its place as a standout entry in the modern indie fantasy genre.
