Cocco Bill #1

Cocco Bill first appeared in 1957 within the pages of the Italian weekly magazine Il Giorno dei Ragazzi. Created by the prolific cartoonist Benito Jacovitti, the character was conceived as a satirical subversion of the traditional American Western. In a departure from the gritty tone of the genre, Cocco Bill was an invincible, tea-drinking cowboy who navigated a surreal and absurdist version of the Old West, accompanied by his philosophical horse, Trottalemme.

Jacovitti's design for the character and his world is renowned for its distinctive, hyper-detailed style, characterized by 'jam-packed' panels filled with bizarre background creatures, hidden details, and his signature visual gags. The series was met with widespread critical acclaim for its inventive use of the medium and its sharp, self-referential wit, eventually becoming a cornerstone of Italian comics. Its success spanned decades, cementing Jacovitti as a central figure in the European comic art tradition.
