Where it came from
Dark Horse Presents #126 was published in December 1997 as part of the long-running anthology series that served as the flagship showcase for Dark Horse Comics. Launched in 1986, the series was designed to provide a platform for creator-owned work and experimental storytelling, moving away from the mainstream superhero focus that dominated the industry at the time. This particular issue appeared during a period when the anthology was consistently spotlighting a mix of established industry veterans and rising independent talent.
The issue is most notable for its contributions to the Concrete series by Paul Chadwick, a critically acclaimed writer and artist known for his thoughtful, humanistic approach to the genre. Chadwick's work on Concrete consistently garnered praise for its literary depth and environmental themes, grounding the surreal premise of a man trapped in a stone body within a realistic, grounded world. The design and narrative flow of this issue reflect the wider anthology's goal of fostering creative freedom, often serving as a sandbox where writers could explore unconventional themes without the restrictions of a monthly ongoing title.
