Where it came from
Dark Horse Presents #20 was published in July 1988 as part of the flagship anthology series that established Dark Horse Comics as a formidable presence in the independent comic book market. Launched in 1986, the series was designed to provide a platform for creator-owned work and experimental storytelling, often showcasing talent that diverged from the mainstream superhero models dominated by Marvel and DC at the time.
This specific issue is notable for continuing the serial nature of the anthology, featuring a mix of burgeoning writers and artists who were given the creative freedom to explore darker, more mature themes. The cover and interior content reflected the publisher's editorial goal of blending pulp-inspired grit with high-quality illustrative techniques, solidifying the series' reputation as a critical laboratory for the medium's evolution during the late 1980s.
