Dark Horse Presents #25

Dark Horse Presents #25, released in late 1988, serves as a significant artifact of the independent comics boom of the late eighties. The anthology series was designed by publisher Mike Richardson to provide a dedicated home for creator-owned works, allowing artists and writers to bypass the editorial constraints of the mainstream publishers. This particular issue maintained the series' mission of blending diverse genres, ranging from noir-inspired crime dramas to avant-garde science fiction, capturing a moment when the industry was rapidly diversifying its storytelling styles.

The issue features contributions from various creators who were defining the gritty, alternative aesthetic of the era. The cover and interior narratives reflect the house style of Dark Horse at the time: high-contrast linework and mature, character-driven scripts. By prioritizing independent creative voices, the publication was well-received by a growing readership that was increasingly disillusioned with the repetitive tropes found in corporate superhero comics, effectively establishing the series as a cornerstone for prestige-format indie anthologies.
