DC Comics Presents #87

Published in November 1985, DC Comics Presents #87 serves as a pivotal bridge between the Silver Age legacy of Superman and the post-Crisis reimagining of the DC Universe. Written by Joey Cavalieri with artwork by Jim Baikie, the issue features an introspective encounter between Superman and Supergirl shortly before the tragic events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline. It is widely regarded by collectors as a somber, character-driven piece that provides necessary emotional weight to the impending erasure of Kara Zor-El from continuity.

The design of the issue captures the era's transition toward more psychologically complex storytelling. Jim Baikie’s illustrative style eschewed the highly stylized aesthetics common in other mid-eighties titles, opting instead for a grounded, poignant visual tone that emphasized the vulnerability of its protagonists. Upon release, the issue was noted by readers and critics for its focus on character dialogue over traditional combat, solidifying its status as an essential chapter in the Superman mythos during a period of significant editorial upheaval at DC Comics.
