Where it came from
DC Comics Presents #88, published in December 1985, serves as a pivotal entry in the DC Comics Presents series, which was primarily designed to showcase team-ups between Superman and various guest stars. This specific issue is particularly notable for featuring a crossover between Superman and Captain Marvel, also known as Shazam, shortly before the massive continuity shifts brought about by the Crisis on Infinite Earths event.
The issue was written by E. Nelson Bridwell with interior art by Curt Swan, a legendary illustrator synonymous with the definitive Silver and Bronze Age look of Superman. The narrative leans into the mythological origins of Captain Marvel, pitting the two heroes against a magical threat that forces them to reconcile their distinct power sets. It remains a classic example of DC's mid-eighties approach to inter-character storytelling before the company-wide reboot restructured their shared multiverse.
