Where it came from
The Weird of the White Wolf, published by First Comics in the mid-1980s, represents a significant moment in the transition of Michael Moorcock's seminal dark fantasy character, Elric of Melniboné, into the medium of sequential art. This series was an integral part of First Comics' commitment to high-quality adaptations of fantasy literature, capturing the grim, ethereal tone of Moorcock's original prose during a decade when sword-and-sorcery comics were seeing a distinct stylistic evolution.
The artistic vision for this adaptation was helmed by P. Craig Russell, whose intricate, art nouveau-influenced linework was instrumental in defining the visual language of Elric for a generation of readers. Russell sought to emphasize the character’s tragic, otherworldly nature, moving away from the typical muscular tropes of the era’s fantasy comics in favor of a more haunting and melancholic aesthetic that was widely praised by critics and long-time fans of the Eternal Champion mythos.
