Where it came from
Published in early 1995, Excalibur #85 serves as a pivotal entry in the series' long-running narrative concerning the titular team of misfit mutants. By this point in the series, the book had evolved from its original premise as an international, lighthearted X-Men spin-off into a more complex, character-driven saga under the creative direction of writer Warren Ellis and artist Ken Lashley.
The issue is particularly noted for its contribution to the 'Legion Quest' storyline, a precursor to the monumental Age of Apocalypse event. Designed to weave the disparate threads of the X-Men universe together, the art by Lashley leans into the mid-nineties aesthetic of dynamic, high-energy layouts that prioritized visual intensity to match the growing stakes of the unfolding editorial crossover.
